The Institute of Telecommunications and Multimedia Applications (iTEAM) is a research center integrated in the Polytechnic City of Innovation, the new scientific park located at the Universitat Politècnica de València. The Institute performs its research and development (R&D) activities in the field of the Information Society Technologies (IST).
The iTEAM is formed by 8 research groups, gathering more than 150 researchers and covering 5 scientific areas related with the Telecommunication Engineering field. iTEAM also develops its R&D activities in the EPS Campus of Gandía within its own researchers and laboratories.
The iTEAM takes part in a great number of competitive R&D projects in the Regional, National and European areas. Moreover, iTEAM transfers its own knowledge and developments to the private sector through multiple agreements and joint development projects with companies.

The origins of iTEAM date back to 1987, with the creation of the Higher Technical School of Telecommunications Engineering (ETSIT) at the UPV. Shortly after, in 1990, the Department of Communications was launched, which concentrated much of the research activity in this field.
In 1999, the Polytechnic University of Valencia approved the Non-Conventional Research Entities (ENCIs), including the Institute of Computer Engineering, Multimedia, Communications and Computing (IMCO2), which consolidated research in telecommunications and multimedia technologies.
IMCO2 officially carried out its activities from 2002 to 2004, when a strategic restructuring took place that focused its work on the area of telecommunications and multimedia applications.
As a result of this evolution, iTEAM was created in 2004 as a space for the integration of UPV telecommunications research groups. A year later, the institute obtained the seal of University Research Institute, consolidating its prestige and leadership in the field of ICT and telecommunications engineering.
